Christine has been a full time textile artist for about eighteen years, after a career in marketing and advertising - which she gave up in order to concentrate on textiles, a consuming interest.
Although she has only limited formal training in painting, there was a strong family background in the arts, and she takes a painterly approach to quiltmaking, mostly painting or dyeing her own fabric. Original surface design is an integral part of her work.
Christine is particularly interested in the natural world. She has been lucky to travel widely, and constantly uses elements of what she has seen in her work, particularly the sea. But she also include ideas from closer to home to express feeling - for instance, fruit images.

This is me (I'm the one on the right) and I am a graphic designer and textile artist living in north Dorset. These two occupations complement each other and I enjoy both. Sometimes the two overlap and my skills and experience give me a unique take on what a client requires. For instance, I design and layout The Quilter magazine for the Quilters' Guild of the British isles. As a graphic designer, I specialise in complex educational books but I can design anything for print. I also create textile art for exhibitions and commissions, lecture and teach workshops around the country.

Although much of her work is created in simple calico, known as muslin in the USA, her elegant ideas and natty notions may be adapted for any type of fabric and used to make quilts, wallhangings, boxes, baskets, cushions, table linen and of course fashion garments and accessories.

Monday 5th February2018 - Ferret - Talk "Quilter? Artist? Lunatic?" Ferret is an astoundingly versatile quilter and textile artist. Her work ranges from traditional pieced to avant-garde applique. Her subjects include everything from dragsters and rock stars to comic books and kitty cats. She works in cotton and leather and is always tripping the boundaries.
Ferret: I purchased my longarm machine because I love patchwork, and I was making more tops than I could quilt on a domestic machine. It was a drastic step but it has helped me keep on top of finishing my quilts. I do the quilting on an ABM Innova System, using all cotton threads. Most of my threads are either Superior or Signature in solid or variegated. My talk is entitled "Quilter? Artist? Lunatic?". This is an approximately 1 hour talk about my journey in quilting. No two are ever quite the same as I bring about 20 quilts from what I have on hand at the moment.

I am a designer and textile artist, author of several books and I teach creative textile workshops. I got hooked on sashiko and I think you will too! Monday 3rd April 2017 - Sylvia Critcher
Sylvia trained at Goldsmith College in Fine Art and Textiles with Constance Howard as her tutor and inspiration. She has taught life drawing, fabric printing, painting and sculpture, embroidery, patchwork and quilting plus a wide range of related textile subjects for many years. Sylvia worked for Kent AE for 33 years. Since 1997 Sylvia has been a National judge, and was Project Co-ordinator for ‘Fabrications’ magazine from 2004-2012. Sylvia feels that she has much to offer as a tutor and as an exhibitor and organiser - “I see my role now is to help raise the awareness of the viewer to the fact that in the future textiles are on an equal footing with all other artefacts. To keep alive lost skills, and to pass on traditional as well as contemporary techniques in any way possible, with as much backing from reputable sources as I can persuade, will seem to be the only way forward in order to fulfil this mission of the 21st century. To this end, I feel that exhibiting my work will help to eventually bring about a different attitude to the value of textile art in society. I have seen some small changes over the years to public attitude to domestic textile heritage and I know that I have helped to rescue many valuable ‘social documents’ from the rubbish bins ……. It’s a start” For the past eight years she has taught week long residential courses for ‘the Spanish Experience’ – a quilters retreat in Valencia, Spain. You can also find her on the ‘Just Hands-on TV’ website.

The large majority of my work has been influenced and inspired by the sea and coast together with their associated themes.
